Miley Cyrus syndrome: Where have all the grown-ups gone?
Soapstone
S- The writer is speaking from an old person. She is speaking in this sense because she doesn't feel old but based on her societal viewpoints she doesn't fit the criteria of young. She makes a reference to a movie that she remembered coming out in 1983 and even included that if you also remembered it than you were "you're tilting ever so slightly (or falling at a 90-degree angle) into the category of 'old.'" She also comes right out and says "Wow, I am old." at the end of the article. O- Larger Occasion: Media's changing outlook on what is age appropriate from her personal thoughts. Immediate Occasion: The controversy over Miley, 21, acting out when she was on the stage with Robin Thicke, a 36 year old man, who was acting equally as racy with less negative comments about his actions. A- Daum's reference to a movie made in 1983 means that she directed it to older adults in their 30s and 40s. Also, her references to pop culture and media means she directed the piece to those who keep up with the latest celebrity news and music trends. P- Daum questions the media and societal views of age appropriateness. She lists all the reasons why the shift occurred but she also believes that the shift in viewpoint creates confusion. S- Duams topic was the shift of societal views on what is age appropriate. TONE- Daum's tone appears to be contemplative. She reflects the views of age appropriateness when she grew up and compares them to how they are now. She also values the reasons why the change occurred. |

Daum backs up the topic by stating two examples of age appropriateness at two different time periods. Her first example comes from a movie exemplifying 30 year olds living an "adult" life and going through "grown up problems." This was a time when she was a child. Her other example comes from an awards show performance where a 21 year old singer dances suggestively on a 36 year old man and only the 21 year old gets called out for her behavior. She gives other tv examples of how older people are being featured in situations where a teen would be. The author supplies a sufficient amount of information about the topic by giving three other examples aside from her main argument. The author assumes that the audience is somewhat familiar with the examples but gives a enough background for someone who wouldn't know. Her information is coming from prime-time television and in the form of a small plot line of the events that took place. She also includes character age and names of actors or creators. It is important for the topic to be discussed from this author's point of view because it is coming from that older generation. The author shows the changes they see in pop culture and media and she analyzes where the difference between the two generations changed. |
